Vision

The MOT aims at constructing new transport systems and increasing the capacity of the existing transport systems in Vietnam.

  • Expressways - The MOT has plans for the construction of 2,347 km of expressways, which include the Northern Expressways, expressways in the central region such as the Western Highland Expressway and Southern Expressways. The MOT also plans to construct ring roads in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh cities.
  • Railways - MOT has plans to upgrade the North-South railway line. Ithas also planned completion of many railway projects by 2020 including Yen Vien-Pha Lai-Ha Long-CaiLan railway, Bien Hoa-Vung Tau railway, Lao Cai-Hanoi-HaiPhong railway, and Dong Dang-Hanoi railway.
  • Airports - The MOT plans to increase Vietnam’s passenger capacity to 63 million passengers per annum and the air cargo capacity to 1 million tons per annum. The MOT’s vision is to have 26 operational airports in various parts of Vietnam.
  • Seaports - The MOT has envisaged the total seaport capacity of Vietnam to be 900 to 1100 million tonsby 2020. To achieve this vision, the MOT has planned large-scale expansion of the ports in the central region, southeast region, and the Mekong Delta region.
  • Inland Waterways - By 2020,the MOT aims to have an inland waterways capacity of 190-210 million tons per annum and 530-540 million passengers. In order to achieve this target, the MOT has planned to improve 12 routes in the Red River Delta and 14 routes in the Mekong Delta. It has also planned to build 82 goods and passenger ports in the northern and southern regions.
